West Virginia Contractor License FAQ

You must obtain a contractor license in WV if you are performing residential construction projects over $5,000 or commercial projects over $25,000.

Yes, the NASCLA exam can be used as your trades exam to obtain a General Building Contractor license in WV. A General Building Contractor is licensed to perform commercial and residential projects. 

The Business and Law exam is to test your knowledge of the state specific rules and regulations in WV, as well as general business question. You are required to pass the Business and Law exam after passing your trades exam. 

This exam is an open book exam, testing on a single book. 

There are 50 questions, and you must receive a 70% to pass. 

A wage bond is required for contractors in WV who have not been actively and actually engaged in construction work in WV for at least one year preceding the completion date of the application/affidavit form. 

You may be exempt from this if you meet one of the following:

  • Have at least $100,000 in assets
  • Have been in business in another state for at least five years
  • Is a subsidiary of a parent company that has been in business for at least five years
