It is timed just as the NASCLA exam is (330-minutes), and you may skip from question to question just like the NASCLA exam.

The NASCLA exam allows you to get your contractor license in 16 different states and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The NASCLA Exam is a 125-question, 330-minute, open book exam. Of the 125 questions, only 115 are counted. You must get 81/115 questions correct to pass. There are 23 books that are allowed in the testing center during this open book exam. Tabbing and highlighting are allowed.

Most states require a business and law exam after passing the NASCLA exam to practice in their state. This is a shorter exam than the NASCLA exam designed to get you familiar with the state’s specific requirements. Once completing the NASCLA exam and the Business and Law exam you are ready to obtain your license. 

You are required to hold a license in most states once you begin projects over a certain dollar value. Be sure to visit your state’s licensing board to gain an understanding of the rules and regulations. Your state’s licensing board website will also hold information for the application process. It is  important to get a good understanding of the application requirements.
