Utah Contractor License FAQ

The Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL) mandates completing 4,000 hours (or 2 years) of supervised on-the-job paid experience. 

You do not need to pass the NASCLA exam to obtain a contractor license in UT. However, the passing the NASCLA exam is an alternative method to meeting the experience requirements in Utah. 

According to the UT  license application, if the applicant has employees or owner-workers holding less than 8% ownership a workers compensation certificate should be submitted with the application. 

According to the contractor license application, all licensees must have general liability insurance.

The certificate of insurance should have the following:

Minimum coverage is $100,000 for each incident and $300,000 in total. 

DOPL’s name and address as the certificate holder. 

Policy covers all your scope of work for the license, for the entire duration of active licensure. 

The application fee in Utah is $50 per qualifier and $175 per classification. 

Be sure that you clearly select the classification(s) that you wish to pursue on your license application.
