NASCLA Questions - FAQ

The NASCLA exam is a contractor licensing exam. It is accepted/administered in 16 states and the U.S. Virgin islands. This reduces the exam redundancy and additional test taking between different states.
- 125 questions – only 115 questions count
- 70% to pass or 81/115 questions correct
- Timed exam: 5-1/2 hours (330 minutes)
The NASCLA exam is multiple choice. Each question is presented with four (4) answers.
The NASCLA exam questions are quite challenging. With a total of 23 books, becoming proficient in navigating each of them can be an undertaking. We recommend taking an online course. We have designed our course to make you familiar with each book front to back. This will help you promptly locate answers during this open book exam.
This all depends on how much effort you are putting in. With a very dedicated student, the course can be completed in a month. We recommend at least 1-3 months or until you are consistently passing the final exams.
Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, US Virgin Islands, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia.
Most states will also require a business, law, and project management exam (or similar). Do not worry! This is a single book exam, and MUCH shorter test than the NASCLA exam. These business, law, and project management exams are designed to get you familiar with with rules and regulations for that specific state.

The application process can take several business days. The test is taken through PSI Exams.

The NASCLA exam has different qualification standards for each state. Our ‘Participating States’ page includes links to helpful articles to describe each state requirements in detail. The NASCLA exam is accepted for a commercial license in each state that accepts it. However, some of the accepting states do not accept the NASCLA exam for a residential license.
Be sure to also visit your state’s licensing board website to understand the specific qualifications.
Yes, you are allowed to tab pages of the books used on the NASCLA exam. We recommend you tab the chapters of the books as this will tremendously help you navigate the books during the exam.
Yes, you may highlight pages of your books for the NASCLA exam. However, you may not write any notes on the pages of the books used on the NASCLA exam.
